PART 2 — THE WINDOW
I pressed myself against the bathroom wall, trying desperately to control my breathing.
Outside, my father-in-law was pounding on the door.
“Sarah! Open this door!”
I said nothing.
My eyes remained fixed on the tiny bathroom window.
It was my only chance.
I climbed onto the edge of the bathtub and pushed the window open.
It was narrow, but I realized I might be able to squeeze through.
Then I heard footsteps behind the door.
He was getting closer.
I looked down.
The window opened onto a small roof above the garage.
It wasn’t safe.
But staying inside wasn’t safe either.
I took a deep breath and climbed through.
I landed on the roof and immediately crouched down.
“Sarah!”
His voice came from inside the bathroom.
He had discovered the open window.
I crawled toward the edge of the roof, desperately searching for a way down.
